BEATRICE – The Emerald Ash Borer is on the doorstep of Southeast Nebraska, and Gage County Extension Educator Nicole Stoner says there is nothing that can stop it.

“So I would say the likelihood in the next three to five years is probably a pretty good chance, but it could be five years down the road it could be 10 years down the road, it could be tomorrow. We don’t really know at this point.”

The Emerald Ash Borer spreads predominantly in firewood, which is why the extension office suggests that people buy their firewood in the same area they intend to burn it. The insect only travels between a half mile and a mile on its own during a year, but can be carried long distances in firewood cut from ash trees.

“Determining that it is an ash tree is going to be your first step in determining what you need to do for you and your landscape for when it does get here.”

The City of Beatrice has done a survey of the trees on public property and have found that 162 trees on public property are ash trees.
